The Dean family originally from Upton Mill

When Upton Park was conceived, Upton Mill was owned by William Carter. At this time William Carter was a farmer with local land as well as being a miller and baker.

Edward Dean - born in 1839 married Carter's daughter Elizabeth and by 1871 was living and working at the Mill. By the time of the 1881 census he was now the Mill owner with his family of five children -
Edward - 15yrs
Joseph - 11 yrs
Bessie - 9 yrs
Helen - 3 yrs
Charles - 1 yr
all living in the Mill House
their first-born William having died aged 2yrs in 1866.

The first UPPA Minutes of 1899 name Edward Dean as present and the 1902 minutes record both E Dean Snr and E Dean Junr. The Minutes then record Edward Junr as Hon Sec and implies Edward Senr as sometime Chairman.

By the 1891 census, Edward jun (now 26 yrs) and brother Joseph are recorded as having moved into an unnamed Park House. The three youngest children still in the Mill house. By the 1901 Electoral Roll; Edward Junr is recorded as the owner of Upton Mill and in 1904; Edward Jun refers to Upton Mill as 'my house' on the UPPA Meeting notices.
Edward (Snr) appears to have retired to 'The Acres' in Upton and died in 1910 aged 72yrs. After Edward (jnr) moved back into the Mill House as the head of household it appears that the rest of Edward (Snr) children had left the Park. Edward (jnr) died young in 1914 at 45yrs - who managed the Mill from that date is not yet known.

Charles and Helen returned later - possibly in the post-WW1 period. It is believed that Charles may have served in WW1 and that the tragedy of his death in the Avenue - 21 Jan 1923 - may have been part of the aftermath of the war. He was found dead with his gun - shot in the head. Helen (Nellie) lived in the Park for a while and then moved away while retaining ownership of some Park properties. There is no further record of son Joseph.
