Plot 26

House numbers 5 & 7 probably built c1868

This property appears to slightly predate next door (nos: 1 & 3) and to have been built in the mid to late 1860s. On the left side no:5 named Portland Villa for schoolmaster Edwin Wilkins and on the right side no:7 named Lily Villa. Records show Wilkins already owning the halfplot of plot 26 by 1857 but the 1861 census shows no occupation. Wilkins also owned the next two plots 27 & 28. Indications are that he died in the early 1870s and his widow moved to Birmingham selling on his estate.

The 1872 OS survey plan shows the double property much as it is today but for the garages first added in the 1930s. Unlike many of the other early properties there is no indication of stable/coachhouse blocks.

No:7 is known to have had a well.
