Moving in the right circles

Recollections from the 1970's and possibly back into the 1960's

The winter cocktail party scene got underway with invitations going out in October. There was a pecking order for sending out the invites. No-one dare send out theirs until Dalzie Comyns had sent hers. Next in line were the Sherwins and then the Wilsons, Lloyds and Frenchs could follow. It was a great honour to receive an invite. The Sherwins belonging to the City Club meant you were greeted with champagne served by waiters. The format was strictly 'noon til two' though stories have emerged of unplanned events such as a resident happily playing away on the piano enjoying their drinks until suddenly with a crash they'd fallen off the piano stool.
