Thomas Gerald Scally
of Fairfield during 1954 - 1969

Thomas Scally in the 1970s after his retirement to the Isle of Man

The following account is from eldest son Thomas Clive Harold Scally.

Thomas Scally was born in 1912 and sent out to Australia by his father at the age of 16. There he married Australian Suzanne Ellison Scally and started a family before returning to England in 1946. After working in Australia House in London and as a clerk for Cammel Laird in Liverpool he decided on nursing and the move to Fairfield (no:16) was the result of eventually working at Chester Deva Mental Hospital.

Tom stood as a local Labour candidate for Upton prior to the Wilson Labour Government years. Those who voted for Thomas G Scally would have seen his motto as ' a sick world needs nursing not cursing' . He often appeared in the Chester Chronicle; sometimes under unusual headlines. One such incident was his plans for putting an ex-RAF rescue launch on the Dee in Chester. He was very patriotic and named their English bulldog - Victor. Amongst his old car collection were three Jaguars, a Riley and a hooded Packard although he often cycled to work at the Deva hospital.

Before the move to Chester the family had 5 boys - Thomas Clive Harold; Maxwell Ellis; Lancelot Derek; Stafford William and Carl Gerald. Mrs Sue Scally always wanted a daughter and four more children were born in Upton Park - Rex Parker; Victoria Suzanne; Diana Elizabeth and Pamela Anabel. All the children attended the local Upton schools over the period. The front room of Fairfield became the 'best' room and was 'out of bounds' to all the children. It was used to impress invited visitors and show off the family trophies.

Tom retired in 1969 and the family moved to the Isle of Man where he had plans to start a golf course. The photograph shows him in the IoM with a boat in the background. He had a dream to cruise around the world but that never came off. He died in 1976 at the age of 64. Mrs Sue Scally; ten years his junior; returned to the Chester area and died in 1989.

Carl is now in Australia but the other children are still in the UK, some local in the Northwest. Clive and Max both worked at Browns of Chester; Clive then joining the RAF in 1965. Stafford was apprenticed to British Aerospace.
