the utilities for Upton Park

Help with Water/Sewerage info from Tim Ackerly of Dee Valley Water....

Water

For the initial few decades the only source of water would have been streams and wells.
Within the Park today;sites of only 8 wells have been identified.

The Park's water main was first laid; apparently;in 1890. According to Dee Valley Water - by 1897 a fair part of Upton (pop. 1313; houses 124) was on mains supply from Chester waterworks.

In 1966 the Chester Water Company sought to improve their supply in Upton Park with the laying of a short length of main across the road opposite no:56. In spring 1999; Dee Valley water replaced the length of main on the westside of the circle (between nos: 1 and 23) due to unacceptable leaks.

Sewerage
In 1897 the 26 houses in the Park delivered sewage into a brook running through Dicksons nurseries. At this time new works were going on at the Asylum to treat their sewage as Upton was polluting the Bache brook and the River Dee.
At least part of the main sewer through the Park was replaced in 1951.

Gas
When gas arrived has not yet been identified but UPPA minutes from the early 1900's urge proprietors to keep tree branchs away from the street lamps. The 1926 Park accounts show a payment of 16/-d to the United Gas Company presumably for the street lighting.

Electricity
The UPPA minute book records in February 1924, a letter from the City of Chester Electrical Engineer asking permission to lay cables in Upton Park. This was accepted by UPPA in accordance with terms and conditions stated. The account of the building of Rhossili (no:4) records both gas and electricity with the 'electricity being very new'. In 1963 MANWEB installed a high voltage underground cable from their substation; situated alongside no:84; running under the Park's roadway into Mill Lane. This was part of a scheme to reinforce electricity supplies in Upton.
